According to a statement released by Nintendo, overall sales of their Nintendo 3DS software in the month of November have increased by more than 40 percent over the same month last year. This is largely due to the success of their recently released Pokémon remakes: Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.
Released on Nov. 21, the two Pokémon games launched to much fanfare and critical acclaim. According to Nintendo’s statement, the two titles together have already sold nearly 1.5 million combined physical and digital copies in the U.S. alone.
Adding to the successful November sales was the launch of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, described by Nintendo as “the best-selling individual portable game in the U.S. so far in 2014.” This title has sold over 1.5 million combined physical and digital copies since its launch on Oct. 3.
The positive sales trends were not exclusive to Nintendo’s portable device. Sales of Wii U hardware are up 10 percent and sales of Wii U software are up 90 percent over this same time period last year. Black Friday was especially kind to Nintendo, with the week of Nov. 23 having the highest sales of Wii U hardware since the system launched in 2012.
While not quite breaking a million units sold, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U still showed strong sales since it launched on Nov. 21, selling approximately 710,000 combined copies in ten days. The title is on track to break one million sales this month.
Launching alongside Super Smash Bros. were Nintendo’s line of Amiibo toy figures. These twelve figures are based on Nintendo characters and carry data that unlocks new content in Nintendo Wii U titles. Sales of these figures are approximately the same as the Super Smash Bros sales, with Link, Mario, and Pikachu selling the most figures in that order.
“This is a ringing endorsement from families and fans that Nintendo has the best variety, the best value, and the best gaming experiences for sale this holiday season,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America‘s executive vice president of sales and marketing. “We’re extremely confident in our holiday proposition and look forward to closing this year strong.”
