Kanye West’s declaration that he would run for president in 2020 got quite a reaction from Donald Trump.
The GOP presidential frontrunner said he has nothing bad to say about the musician, who declared at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night — basically tongue-in-cheek — that he would run for president in 2020, according to an NBC News report.
Trump said he would “never say bad about him” because he “loves Trump,” and West has “been so great.”
It’s a bit of change for Donald Trump, who has developed a reputation lately for putting down everyone who would even suggest they could run against him successfully. But he wasn’t nearly as harsh with Kanye West, who he said he considers a friend.
Asked at a press conference about Kanye West’s announcement, made during an acceptance speech at the awards ceremony, Trump said that Kanye often called him his “all-time hero,” and for that reason Trump said he loves him.
However, the two might become enemies if he actually follows through with his promise. “Now, maybe in a few years I will have to run against him, I don’t know. So I’ll take that back,” Trump remarked according to the report.
While West isn’t exactly on the record on his like or dislike of Trump, he has referenced the billionaire before. A lyric in one of his songs goes: “Donald Trump taking dollars from y’all.” But that’s about all anyone knows about Kanye’s opinion, aside from Donald Trump’s claims.
His actual activities might suggest he wouldn’t support Trump for president. He and his wife, Kim Kardashian, were at a private fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination who Trump has frequently ridiculed. Clinton even took a selfie with Kardashian and West.
